Building a Forever Foundation

After a long travel schedule this Advent—following a very full and demanding fall—I finally forced myself to do something I haven’t done in a very long time: I took a few days off.

If you know me at all, you know this didn’t come easily. I tend to be a bit of a workaholic. And if I’m being honest, stepping away can actually create its own kind of stress as I think about everything waiting for me when the time of rest is over. Still, for the sake of my health—and my sanity—I intentionally put things aside to focus on family and simply rest.

I share this not just to tell you about my own struggle, but because of something I was reminded of in prayer during that quiet time.

As we enter a new year, many of us set goals, make resolutions, and carry hopes and dreams for what we want to accomplish. While those desires are good, focusing too heavily on the end result can actually place unnecessary pressure on us—especially when that outcome feels far away or unclear. Instead of obsessing over what we hope to achieve months from now, this season invites us to focus on something more important: building a foundation.

Real, lasting change doesn’t happen because of a single achievement or milestone. It happens when we commit to daily habits and small choices that form a “forever foundation”—one that everything we do now and in the future will rest upon. Foundations matter. Whether in Scripture, in wisdom passed down through generations, or in our own lived experience, we are constantly reminded that what we build must be able to withstand both storms and success. A solid foundation gives us something to lean on when things don’t go as planned—and something sturdy enough to stand on when we have reason to celebrate.

So as you move forward into this new season, I offer you one word to focus on: foundation.

Even in our faith, it is not merely the outward expressions or visible signs that endure, but the foundation of our relationship with God. A deep, rooted connection—formed day by day—is what stands the test of time. A forever foundation is what we cling to when motivation fades, circumstances shift, or life feels heavy.

May it be your focus too.
